A "Brussels Effect" for EU Digital Governance? Legal, Political, and Economic Considerations

Offline

The so-called “Brussels effect” refers to the formal and informal power of the European Union to regulate global markets and influence legal systems beyond the EU Member States.

Although this phenomenon has been observed in different sectoral areas, it has been particularly highlighted with the RGPD in the work of Professor Anu Bradford (Columbia Law School).

Moreover, with the digital transformation, the EU has decided to develop its regulatory framework in many areas, such as artificial intelligence, data governance, chips, digital services, digital markets or copyright, to shape a European digital environment in line with its values.

This conference focuses on the externalization of core EU values through digital governance legislation (“the Brussels effect”) and the wider impact of EU legislation on innovation policy.

On Thursday, 27 April, at 17:00, Professor Anu Bradford will open the conference with a keynote address.

On Friday, 28 April, early career researchers will present and discuss their research with senior researchers in law, economics, information systems, engineering and political science.

The conference will close with a panel discussion on “Beyond the Brussels Effect”.

This conference is jointly organised by University of Lausanne, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), University of Groningen, LUISS, Université Libre de Bruxelles and Wallonie-Bruxelles International.
