AI Happy Hour | Image Retrieval of Prior Patient Cases for Enhancing Breast Reconstruction Clinical Consultation

Offline

Join us on January 26 at 17:30 for an evening of networking at our next AI Happy Hour event and learn more about advances in breast reconstruction care and how emerging technologies are shaping surgical planning, patient experiences, and post-mastectomy well-being.

This in-person event will take place on Monday 26 January at 17:30 in the FARI Test and Experience Center (Cantersteen 16, 1000 Brussels).

Nassima Noufail is AI Training Expert at FARI — AI for the Common Good Institute. She holds a PhD in Computer Science, specializing in AI applications for healthcare. Her academic journey and professional experience as a teacher and research assistant have equipped her with deep technical knowledge and a passion for translating complex technological research into meaningful solutions that benefit society.

Description of the session: Breast reconstruction surgery helps women restore their physical appearance and contributes to overall well-being. The use of prior patient image retrieval plays a crucial role in pre-surgical planning of this surgery, enabling surgeons to tailor procedures for optimal aesthetic results. This study introduces a 3D torso image retrieval (3DTIR) algorithm that leverages suggestive contours to search a database by matching torso silhouettes between query and archived images. We assessed the algorithm’s ability to retrieve medically appropriate images, considering how much counseling would be needed to ensure the images retrieved do not mislead. In this talk, Nassima will explain why breast reconstruction surgery is a crucial component of post-mastectomy care and how advanced image-based technologies can further improve surgical planning and patient outcomes. In particular, the use of prior patient image retrieval enables surgeons to rely on large collections of clinical data to support informed and personalized decision-making. The capabilities of this approach will be discussed alongside an evaluation of its ability to retrieve medically appropriate examples, with special attention to the level of patient counseling required to ensure that retrieved images are interpreted accurately and do not lead to misleading expectations. Finally, the talk will also address body image dissatisfaction following breast reconstruction, highlighting the psychological dimensions of surgical outcomes and the importance of managing patient expectations alongside aesthetic results.
