AI Happy Hour | An Immersive Courtroom Digital Twin – AI-Driven Conversational Agents and Virtual Environments for Justice Applications

Offline

Join us on February 23 at 17:30 for an evening of networking at our next AI Happy Hour event and learn “ how immersive technologies like virtual reality and AI are being used to create a “digital twin” of the justice system—and discuss what this could change (and risk) for access to justice, fairness, and how trials are conducted.

This in-person event will take place on Monday 23 February at 17:30 in the FARI Test and Experience Center (Cantersteen 16, 1000 Brussels).

Sébastien Meeùs is a PhD candidate in Law at Université de Montréal, in a joint doctorate with Université libre de Bruxelles, where he also teaches in the Data Law course. His research examines how corporate compliance practices shape the effective exercise of individuals’ rights in digital environments, with a focus on Web3, video games, and virtual worlds from a global law perspective. He has contributed to legal-tech compliance tools (including GDPR-120Q and JusticeBot) and to research on the normative power of private actors in digital regulation.

Description of the session: As part of the VIRAJ (Virtualization and Augmentation of Justice) project, the Cyberjustice laboratory is experimenting with several technologies—virtual reality, 3D modeling, and conversational agents powered by LLMs—to design an immersive environment dedicated to judicial processes.

This digital twin targets three complementary use cases: virtual hearings, skills training (especially for oral arguments), and raising public awareness of how the justice system works.

For certain experiments, the system draws on FARI’s expertise in digital twins and its CAVE (Computer-Augmented Virtual Environment), enabling immersive experiences that are comparable to those in professional driving or aviation simulators. These technical developments raise concrete legal issues, particularly the risks of influence associated with visualizing evidence (the “realism effect” or “wow effect”), access to justice, the digital divide, and the potential impact on the administration of justice.

Sébastien Meeùs, a doctoral student at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, in a joint PhD with the Université de Montréal, and lead researcher on the VIRAJ project, will provide an overview of the system and its objectives. He will then demonstrate the main technical advances achieved thus far.

Is this for you? Administrators, industry professionals and AI enthusiasts are invited to join this session.

A balanced mix of learning and relaxation – Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions with Yannick, followed by a casual happy hour with snacks and beverages!
