The fifth edition of the FARI Brussels Conference will take place on November 23 at Flagey Studios in Brussels, under the theme “Brussels, Capital of AI?”. Organized by the FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute, this event will bring together experts in AI, robotics, ethics, and regulation to discuss how we can support Brussels in strengthening its role as a leader in responsible, sovereign AI grounded in collaboration and societal impact.
Many countries and cities have embraced AI, with several aiming to become its “capital” — places where innovation, startups, and regulation converge. Across Europe, from Brussels to Paris, London to Helsinki, multiple cities now claim this role.
But what does it mean to have several “capitals” of AI? Does this fragmentation weaken or strengthen the landscape? Beyond global competition, has any city truly built an inclusive model that empowers local communities?
The FARI Conference 2026 will explore these questions, bringing together perspectives from cities at different stages of their AI journey. Rather than focusing on competition, it asks a more fundamental question: do we need a capital of AI at all, and could Brussels become one?
Brussels stands at a pivotal moment. AI, data, and robotics are no longer abstract topics but practical concerns for public institutions, businesses, researchers, and citizens. The question is no longer whether AI will shape Brussels, but how Brussels will shape AI. With its strong research ecosystem and policy influence, the city is well positioned to develop an approach that is competitive, but also trustworthy, inclusive, and rooted in public value.
The FARI Brussels Conference is an event organised by FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute, a research institute founded by the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The institute is an initiative that aims to develop, study and foster the adoption and governance of AI, Data and Robotics technologies in a trustable, transparent, open, inclusive, ethical and responsible way.
Building upon the success of previous conferences, FARI continues its mission to provide a platform for researchers, experts, industry leaders and citizens to engage in critical discussions surrounding AI, data, and robotics. The growing demand for such dialogues has been clearly demonstrated by the overwhelming participation at last year’s event, which attracted over 800 attendees around the theme “AI, Robots, & Us: Living with Intelligent Agents?“. This year, we aim to broaden the conversation, placing greater emphasis on both the European and Belgian contexts.
Launched for the first time during the FARI Brussels Conference 2026, the FARI Brussels Local Impact Award recognises projects using AI, data, robotics or digital technologies to create meaningful public value for Brussels and its communities.
The award highlights initiatives that show how innovation can respond to local needs, support the common good, and contribute to a more responsible, inclusive and sustainable digital future.
