Join us on November 30 at 17:30 for an evening of networking at our next AI Happy Hour session: “Human after Data: Who should decide over your personal data?”
This in-person event will take place on Monday November 30 October at 17:30 at FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute (Cantersteen 12, 1000 Brussels).
August Bourgeus holds a Master’s in Business Engineering and a PhD in Communication Sciences from imec-SMIT-VUB, focusing on personal data governance, privacy, and the role of intermediaries in data sharing. His current research shifts from individual data control to the ecosystem level, examining how AI and data-governance arrangements shape power relations among citizens, institutions, and industry.
Description of the session: Our lives are increasingly datafied. Personal data is collected, processed and shared often with a limited understanding of the people it is about. The resulting flows are increasingly opaque, difficult to contest, and shaped by the power of large technology companies. European regulation tries to put citizens back in control, but historically that control has mostly come down to consent, and clicking “accept” rarely means real choice. So what could actually help citizens?
This talk explores whether trusted data intermediaries could take on part of this burden, drawing on empirical work with citizens and with organisational stakeholders. When would people hand over some of these decisions, and to whom? With personal AI assistants increasingly acting on our behalf, that question is becoming more and more urgent.
Is this for you? Administrators, industry professionals and AI enthusiasts are invited to join this session.
A balanced mix of learning and relaxation – Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions with August, followed by a casual happy hour with snacks and beverages!
This event is free to attend, but registration is compulsory. This event is organized by FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute.
