Join us for an evening of networking to explore how Artificial Intelligence can help decode complex genetic diseases at our AI Happy Hour event! This in-person event will take place on Monday 27 October at 17:30 in the FARI Test and Experience Center (Cantersteen 16, 1000 Brussels).
Inas Bosch is a PhD candidate at the FARI Institute and the Interuniversity Institute of Bioinformatics in Brussels (IB2). After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, she went on to complete a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Modelling at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. At the end of her Master’s degree, she completed a Master’s thesis focusing on genetic diseases. This work explored the use of knowledge graph embeddings – a representation learning approach – to study rare genetic diseases, particularly digenic diseases, in which two mutated genes are involved. Her PhD research extends this work by exploring the subject more in-depth and by adapting the developed tool to a clinical setting, with the aim of facilitating the diagnosis of affected patients and the development of clinical treatments.
Description of the session: Rare genetic diseases affect millions of people through the world and, due their rarity, still largely remain elusive. Understanding their genetic causes could allow the development of various diagnostic tools and adapted therapeutical treatments, leading to an increase in the life quality and expectancy of the affected patients. However, despite efforts in developing appropriate tools to study these disease, unraveling their underlying mechanisms still remains a challenge.
In this talk, Inas Bosch will explain why understanding genetic diseases is so crucial and how harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to do so could be a further step in the right direction. Indeed, AI is able to rely on vast quantities of biological knowledge to provide relevant answers. A description of such tools and the advances they have allowed in the field of genetic diseases will be included, with a particular focus on diseases, in which several genes are involved. Furthermore, an introduction to novel Machine Learning tools will be provided, along with an explanation of how structured biological knowledge may be used to elucidate the complex causes of genetic diseases.
Is this for you? Administrators, industry professionals and AI enthusiasts are invited to join this session.
A balanced mix of learning and relaxation – Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in insightful discussions with Yannick, followed by a casual happy hour with snacks and beverages!
This event is free to attend, but registration is compulsory. This event is organized by FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute.
