Join us on September 28 at 17:30 for an evening of networking at our next AI Happy Hour session: “Beyond Optimism and Scepticism: AI through the Lens of Translation Studies.” Learn more about FARI and explore the debate surrounding the impact of new AI technologies on human communication, as well as the opportunities and limitations they present for the field of translation.

This in-person event will take place on Monday 28 September at 17:30 in the FARI Test and Experience Center (Cantersteen 16, 1000 Brussels).

Sonja Janssens is a teacher and researcher at the Faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). She holds a PhD in Linguistics and works in the field of translation studies. Her interests span both historical and contemporary perspectives on translation, with a particular focus on the impact of technological developments on professional practice, research and training.

Description of the session: Within the field of translation, responses to artificial intelligence range from strong scepticism to pragmatic acceptance. While AI offers clear opportunities to enhance productivity and support multilingual communication in specific settings, it also thoroughly challenges established understandings of translation, professional practice and translator education. The rapid uptake of generative AI has intensified these debates while leaving important questions about its broader current and future implications for human communication unresolved.

A translation studies perspective evaluates AI against the backdrop of translation and interpreting as complex human practices of negotiating meaning across languages. Beyond assessing technical performance, it also examines how language functions in context and how human agency shapes intercultural communication.

The presentation calls for continued dialogue between computational AI research and linguistics, translation studies and the broader humanities to ensure that technological innovation is informed by a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of language and communication.
