About the Study

Applications are invited for 2 full-time post-doctoral (3 years) research positions at the Machine Learning Group, Computer Science Department, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (mlg.ulb.ac.be).

The 2 postdocs will be involved in a joint research project (2 academic partners and one Brussels-based company) which aims at developing a framework and a methodology for the monitoring of heterogeneous traffic data. The emphasis will be on developing data-driven models for traffic data imputation, interpolation and forecasting as well as providing intuitive tools and visualisations for the study of the traffic situation as well as its evolution at the level of a metropolitan area, with Brussels as the central use case. The goal is to provide public authorities and infrastructure managers with the tools to better understand and quantify the impact of their policies on their citizen’s well-being.

Job Description

The researcher is expected to carry out fundamental research in Data Science/Machine Learning/Big Data Mining and to take a leading role in an applied research project on data science for traffic modelling and forecasting which is funding the position. Interaction with other running projects, and supervision of Master students and PhD researchers are expected too

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Engineering or Computer Sciences and demonstrate proficiency in programming (e.g. python, R, Spark), computational data science, analytics and machine learning. Past experience with applied machine learning or massive datasets analytics as well as scalable machine learning will be considered an asset. The applicant should have good organizational skills, a taste for interdisciplinary research, excellent scientific writing and presenting skills and be able to work independently.

About the Research Group

The Machine Learning Group, ULB is a research group that carries out theoretical research on statistical machine learning, predictive modeling and computational statistics, and takes part in several applied research projects in domains as diverse as big data mining, bioinformatics to biomedical engineering and fraud detection. MLG is involved in several research initiatives at international and national levels: it is a  member of the CLAIRE confederation, a member of the TRAIL Walloon initiative on AI and of FARI, the Brussels AI institute.
