Digital Inclusion Workers Invited to Take Part in Algorithm Literacy Survey

Author

Alice Demaret, Andrea Torres Perdomo

As part of the ALGO-LIT project, FARI invites digital inclusion workers to participate in a survey focused on algorithm literacy and transparency. The initiative aims to better understand the knowledge needs of professionals supporting citizens in a context increasingly shaped by automated systems. To create effective tools and training, we need a deeper understanding of the challenges and contexts digital inclusion professionals face.

That is why we invite professionals and activists working in digital inclusion—such as those involved with Espaces Publics Numériques (EPN), Openbare Computerruimte (OCR), libraries, CPAS, and similar initiatives—to take part in a 10-minute survey. The goals of the questionnaire are to:

– Identify current practices related to algorithm literacy
– Understand the needs of workers already helping the public—or preparing to do so—navigate algorithmic systems
– Discover specific algorithms professionals want to explore in more depth

The survey is available in both French and Dutch.

Do you want to know more about the ALGO-LIT Project?

Across Europe, opaque algorithms are influencing decisions that affect people’s lives. From the automated calculation of government subsidies to the pricing of insurance policies and the use of chatbots to help users navigate consumer rights, algorithms and artificial intelligence are embedded in daily life and can affect or improve the exercise of their rights. As part of their jobs, digital inclusion workers—whether they are helpers, mediators, social workers, or public servants—are regularly asked questions about automation and algorithmic decision-making by the communities they serve.

The ALGO-LIT project trains professionals involved in digital inclusion to support the public in understanding how algorithms work and how they impact daily life. We aim to equip them with the necessary skills to strengthen digital inclusion and empower citizens to engage with algorithm-based decisions.

ALGO-LIT identifies existing needs, connects professionals, offers training, and co-develops practical tools in collaboration with the community. Rather than focusing solely on making code accessible, the project promotes algorithmic transparency through mediation—fostering clear communication, meaningful explanation, literacy and the development of communities of practice. This Erasmus+ initiative is a collaboration between Datactivist and La Mednum (France), Waag Futurelab (Netherlands), and FARI (Belgium).
